Hello Our Children Coalition Members,
As many of you know, Governor Tim Walz ordered Minnesota classrooms closed for the rest of the school year. Although Our Children understands the Governor’s order and wants everyone to be safe and healthy, we’ve seen distance learning present significant challenges for students, parents and educators.
Last week, we shared an article from the Pioneer Press explaining the impact distance learning is having on the state’s achievement gaps crisis, and with the Governor’s order, that gap will only continue to widen. Here’s more from MPR. Our Children is concerned about the unintended consequences this will have on our children’s public education, which is why we believe it’s critically important all of us continue to reach out to our elected officials, and the Minnesota Department of Education to make sure necessary resources are being provided to our communities.
We wanted to share with you an article from the Star Tribune on this very topic, and how legislative leaders will need to come to an agreement on the best path forward. Our Children believes any proposals legislative leaders decide on will need to have input from all of us, so let’s get engaged. Our Children’s Rashad Turner was on Fox9 to discuss this issue, specifically about attendance policies and barriers for families during COVID-19.
Lastly, a federal court recently ruled on a case involving the Detroit Public Schools and their student’s education rights that we’ll be watching. You can read more here from The New York Times.
All of us from the Our Children team continue to wish you and your families health, safety, and strength!
