Coalition Update – Our Children Joins Minnesotans in Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week and Observing Mental Health Awareness Month

Hello Our Children Coalition Members,

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, Our Children would like to thank all of Minnesota’s teachers and staff for their incredible commitment to educating Minnesota students. Your dedication and passion for our children makes us proud every single day, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. Distance learning has magnified some of our education challenges in Minnesota, especially the disparities that exist.

EdAllies had a good blog post this week about internet access for education and what Minnesota schools are doing to increase internet and device access.

KARE11 highlighted retailers who are offering deals for Teacher Appreciation Week including Costco, Verizon, Barnes & Noble, Michaels and Sonic.

WCCO had a video on their Facebook page engaging people to see if they value teachers more now that children are distance learning.

These are great examples of the gratitude we all have for our educators who are the backbone of our communities.

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, shining a light on the importance of mental health services for our students, educators and schools. This month is always important, but as with a lot of things, our society’s mental health has been highlighted with Coronovirus.

The Washington Post ran a story on the mental health crisis across the nation, and how students are creating routines and online guides to help fellow students.

The Faribault Daily News promoted Minnesota Online Counseling (MOC) and how they can help individuals and families with mental health issues while practicing social distancing.

It’s so important to keep the mental well-being of our students and educators in mind as we continue on this COVID-19 journey together. If you know of anyone in need of mental health resources, the National Alliance on Mental Illness has some helpful information.

All of us from the Our Children team continue to wish you and your families health, safety, and strength!

Thank you,

Our Children
